"Reciting and reading Arabic verses from the Qur'an was an integral part of my upbringing. Although I never fully understood their meanings as a child, the experience left a lasting impression on me. By painting Arabic letters, I am striving to reconnect with the signs and symbols and understand the meanings they evoke. In the process I endeavour to understand the ethos of my traditions as an artist.
Painting Arabic letters is a spontaneous and deeply immersive act for me, almost like a spiritual experience. It allows me to fully engage in the process of mark-making, where each stroke becomes an intuitive expression of my inner self.
I feel the act of washing the works afterward adds depth, revealing new layers and inviting abstraction to emerge. The letters then transform from mere symbols into a meditative exploration, bridging the tangible and the transcendent." - Saubiya Chasmawala
