Sometime between the two pandemic lockdowns is when Sameer Kulavoor began delving deeper into architectural elements and continued to pursue them because they grew more and more interesting to him. In Dense City, Kulavoor builds on his observations of Mumbai’s rapidly changing urban landscape, focusing specifically on the construction of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor. The bridge, which cuts horizontally across the city, rises nearly six stories high, an imposing structure that reconfigures both sightlines and light. Travelling along the monorail that the bridge passes through, Kulavoor noted how the bridge’s massive columns press up against residential buildings, close enough to peep directly into people’s windows, casting deep shadows. Through this work, he reflects on the unsettling intersections between infrastructure, habitation, and the scale of the city.
