Basel Project One , as the title suggests, is the first series of drawings that Shroff creates on her arrival in Basel, Switzerland. She uses drawing as a method to familiarise herself to this unknown city that would be her home from October 2021 to September 2022 as a guest of the Stiftung Laurenz Haus.
Basel Project One is rather special, unlike her other works that are meticulously sketched and planned. Here, each drawing is executed as soon as it is found, almost as if she were making notations on a map. These street objects, that start out as visual navigator markers, over the course of their making, take on the form of a collection, akin to souvenirs in a vitrine, extracted from the city-scape as mnemonic tokens. Removed from the location of their encounter and isolated, the drawings manoeuvre between mapping and collecting. Shroff does not have a fix arrangement for these drawings, but thinks of them like a Tangram game, where these 35 drawings can be rearranged to indulge us in new rhythms that can emerge.
