Sometimes figures and gestures reappear in different formats and media in his work because they are not exhausted. They keep asking to be seen again, differently.
What may appear as a scribble or an unfinished sketch is actually bits of thought being jotted down on paper before they get resolved in another format or medium.
When working in a small format, there is nowhere to hide behind scale. Every mark has to carry its own weight. Repetition becomes a kind of rhythm where the hand leads and the mind cannot plan in advance.
