Shruti Mahajan contemplates instruments in the making of art and language: the dexterity of a line, the weight of colour, and the shape of an alphabet. A set of wooden modelling tools have become a string of aleph, the first alphabet in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, or they can be read as diacritics, or as unconscious scribbles. She draws on them, covers them in old papers, lines them up, as if forming words, phrases, and sentences. Is there meaning to be found here, like verses on a monument, or calligraphy gracing a talismanic bowl? Perhaps these are spaces of implicit understanding as "words" are legible, but not comprehensible.
