Blur Memo is a recent sequence from Sameer Kulavoor's ongoing series Drawn Timelapses — an evolving film project begun in 2020 that now comprises more than 50 short sequences. For this work, he used a found monthly memo pad, allowing its 31-day grid to guide the movement of paint marks, patches, and imprints. Working across the pages, he added one mark at a time before moving to the next gesture and repeating the process, gradually allowing the sequence to accumulate and unfold. Lately he has been thinking about time, transience, and ephemerality within urban life. Fast-moving cities, relentless global news cycles, and the slower, more interior time of the studio all seem to operate at different speeds, often collapsing one's sense of day, duration, and continuity. Through these sequences, he has been interested in responding instinctively — drawing frame by frame without fully planning or storyboarding the outcome in advance — allowing the work to evolve through repetition, rhythm, and incremental shifts.
