This new body of marble sculptures mark a significant evolution in Natasha Preenja’s practice, following years of engagement with traditional wood-turning crafts through collaborations with artisan clusters in Andhra Pradesh. This series extends her longstanding exploration of form, material memory, and gendered embodiment.

Titled Mothers, Bodies of Stone these sculptures serve as portraits of women who bear the invisible weight of pain, sorrow, and unfulfilled desire. They do not speak, yet their silence is dense with meaning. The works draw on poetic metaphors: she carries rooms on her back; she spoon-feeds the world her spine; she ignores her aches; her name is left unsaid. (Natasha has been writing little haiku poems)

Through the act of carving marble—historically a material of permanence, monumentality, and masculine connotation—the artist seeks to reframe the female subject not as muse or passive form, but as a site of endurance, resilience, and quiet power. Each monolith stands not merely as an object, but as a gesture: a woman holding space amidst the relentless motion of the world.
This series is both an homage and a resistance—honoring the selfless labor of women while asserting their right to be seen, named, and remembered.
