Apnavi Makanji's Léman Fish Series is a reflection on the intersection of nature, identity, and ecology, drawing from Switzerland's water ecosystems. Based in Geneva, Makanji often swims in lake Léman, engaging directly with the natural world.
This series documents the diverse species of Lake Léman and the Rhône River. While these species are currently considered indigenous, some, like the rainbow trout introduced in 1887 from the US to compensate for the decline of the local population of trout at the time due to overfishing, reveal the human impact on local ecosystems. Through detailed graphite drawings on paper, Makanji captures these species intricately, honoring their place in this evolving landscape.
