“I call this a series of micro interventions. It’s not something I specifically set out to find, but it’s also not as constructed or staged as the Ice block pieces. It’s simply the shadows I noticed, created by a bamboo plant at a certain time of day near Jimmy Boy, as the title suggests. After reflecting on it and returning several times, I started placing light gels on the branches to experiment with the colors generated by the strong afternoon sunlight, particularly between 2-3 pm. Timing was crucial, so I spent a few days revisiting this spot, resulting in about 250 photographs. The right moment was unpredictable, and it depended on the wind as well as the sun’s position. It’s about finding the right balance of shadow, color, and the elements.“Light dada” refers to the person managing the light on set, but the term “dada” is also a nod to the surrealist tradition in photography and my engagement with the city. Dadaism, which precedes surrealism, plays a significant role in this work. I’m also interested in how words travel between cultures, languages, and scripts, which is why I’ve included the term “dada” in the title.” – Philippe Calia
