A repurposed chintz, a corner of this paisley-printed tablecloth fragment was salvaged by the artist’s grandmother in the mid-70’s. Embroidery across it is a synaesthesic reaction that was based on sound, colour and from correspondences, after a live musical reading witnessed from the tomb of the 14th Century Persian Poet Hafez in Shiraz, Iran. The title of this work cites a quartet from Hafez's ‘Divan’, referring to his love for wine and the sacraments used by the Three Wise Men (Magi) *one of whom was a Zoroastrian priest from Urmia, in present-day East Azerbaijan (*the very figure who traveled to Bethlehem & witnessed the birth of Jesus Christ, then turned a Zoroastrian temple into what is known today as the second-oldest church in Christendom). These layered impressions are made as reactions to faith and the blurred lines between historic and contemporary modes of storytelling; Katki attempts to execute his verses via mark-making across old domestic cloth planes, ragged heirlooms inherited from beloved matriarchs in his family.
