In this new body of work, Saubiya Chasmawala expands upon themes from her earlier exhibition, ‘Pilgrimage of Historical Oversights’, 2017. She revisits photographs from the family pilgrimages in 1994 (to Iran and Iraq), 1998 (to Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Israel) and 1999 (to Saudi Arabia and Yemen), returning to images of her younger self. These moments of devotion and ritual give a voice to the artist when she was a child. The veiled marks and illegible text on these images echo the half-understood verses she once recited, speaking of a yearning for reverence. They capture the quiet weight of faith carried in childhood and the enduring power of all that remains unsaid.
