The careful selection of works on display at Art Mumbai carries the pulsating energy of the artists’ personal journeys through material and intellectual inventions. Just as the practice of
introspection involves assessing the layers of memories, experiences and emotions, each of
the artists’ expressions foster layering of thoughts, materials, and processes at the tail end of
their pursuits.

For artist Savia Mahajan, drawing is an attempt to keep up with the repetitive action of
placing lines on paper that commands slowing down and being present, after delicately hand-dyeing the paper in vegetable pigments. Rah Naqvi and Boshudhara Mukherjee appropriate fabric in distinct ways where one juxtaposes the ideas of dissent and contemporary perceptions with the tenderness of family, care and healing, and the other takes on an intuitive journey of cutting and weaving elaborate works driven by the appealing colors and textures of fabrics.

In Saubiya Chasmawala’s works script refrains from delivering literal meaning, repeated,
layered, transformed and abstracted to become symbolic. Juxtaposed with layers of cleanly
cut paper that Nibha Sikander assembles, she replenishes her formative memories and finds
the semblance of scripts from the Konkan coast’s biodiversity. Absorbed in the process of
print-making, Soghra Khurasani places the intimate connections between human bodies and
earth nature at the center of her practice.
