Matters of the Art
After her show Pilgrimage of Historical Oversights at Clark House in 2017, artist Saubiya Chasmawala return with her second solo exhibition in Mumbai this month. For this show, she attempts to engage with the Arabic script, in a bid to push the boundaries of abstraction. The artist - who is the recipient of the prestigious Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship Award (2011-12) and Inlaks Fine Art Award (2016) - currently practices her art at a personal studio in Vadodara.

Art India Magazine: Flesh and Bone
In Saubiya Chasmawala's Batin (2019) at Tarq, Mumbai, Arabic letters are rendered on paper with a performative flourish to release charged formal patterns. The gesture of continuously repeating sharpes - the curls, the curves, the swirls- is liberating but also paradoxically leads to the celebration of an overwhelming desire to shroud, shadow and envelop.
